New School Equity Audit Tool

Revisions to the audit were made based on research and feedback from practitioners including members of the NAESP’s Task Force on Race and Equity.

NAESP is proud to share the release of an updated 2021 version of the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC) Equity Audit. Revisions to the audit were made based on research and feedback from practitioners including members of the NAESP’s Task Force on Race and Equity. The audit was also revised in light of the new realities faced by schools due to COVID-19. Additionally, the scale for rating each item was revised from a two-point scale to a four-point scale to account for the different stages at which institutions may find themselves on their equity journey. Expanding the scale allows for a more thorough look at where each entity is in regards to equity.

MAEC’s Equity Audit consists of three component tools designed as questionnaires for school leaders, educators, and staff to assess if their schools and classrooms are equitable across various criteria. The three questionnaires are: Criteria for an Equitable School (composed of 101 questions), Criteria for an Equitable Classroom (composed of 36 questions), and Teacher Behaviors that Encourage Student Persistence (composed of 59 questions).

The audit is intended to help school staff develop a more concrete understanding of what it means to practice equity, and reflect on whether current school policies, procedures, and practices at each level are equitable. MAEC hopes that with this updated version, school administrators and educators are better equipped to identify and address the equity needs present within their schools and classrooms.
