Dr. Shawn M. Roberts has led Scott City Elementary School (SCES), a pre-K-2 school in rural Kansas, for the past 15 years, building a regional reputation as a zealous advocate for public education with a strong commitment to early childhood education and nurturing young educators. In 2013, Roberts set out to implement a multi-tiered intervention model that has been so successful that the school needed to add an enrichment tier to accommodate a growing number of students reading beyond their grade level, making SCES a model school at the state level. This success will soon be replicated to target social and emotional learning goals. Roberts has taken a collaborative approach to manifesting the school’s goal of kindergarten readiness, working closely with a local preschool to sharpen and streamline curriculum and implementing a Parents as Teachers Program to track early developmental progress, leading to a 14-percent decrease in the number of incoming students flagged as performing below grade level. Roberts served on the Kansas Education Commissioner’s Blue Ribbon Task Force and the Kansas BOE Teacher Vacancy Supply Committee and helped pass a limited license for elementary and special education teachers that filled hundreds of teacher vacancies in the state. She holds a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Administration from Southwestern College, a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Washburn University, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Emporia State University.
