David “Cal” Callaway has led the elementary division of the International Community School of Addis Ababa for three years, having previously served for three years as principal at the International School of Latvia. Callaway has led the school through the past year of regional civil unrest and the worldwide pandemic with skill, compassion, and a focus on promoting the wellbeing of students and staff. His counterpart in the high school commends Callaway’s transformational and authentic leadership style, his attention to detail, and his ability to inspire all stakeholders to higher levels than what is expected of them. A firm believer in the importance of personalized learning, Callaway has driven the implementation of personalized learning communities into the classroom, focusing on the four critical questions and MTSS to support students who are excelling and those who are struggling. Using a Response to Intervention approach, Callaway steered the formation of grade level teaching teams and worked to ensure a special education instructor is integrated with each classroom and always available for targeted intervention. Attuned to the particular challenges of leading an international school, Callaway has also worked to ensure equity in teacher and educational assistant training, compensation, and recruitment. Callaway holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Oxford, an M.A. in Educational Leadership from the University of London, and is completing his Ed.D. from Wilkes University.
