Practitioner’s Corner: A New Approach to Easing First-Day Jitters

By Mervin HunterPrincipal, May/June 2011 The first day of school can be hectic for all involved, especially students and their parents. My faculty and I sought to alleviate some of this anxiety while also building better relationships with students and parents alike. Our solution was to conduct an open house on the first day of school instead of classes. We visualized the open house as a day when students would come to school with their parents and all their school supplies to meet their new teacher and become familiar with the classroom.
