Every Student Succeeds Act

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law Dec. 10, 2015, ending No Child Left Behind. NAESP has pushed Congress to support districts and schools with capacity-building for educators to ensure effective practice is supported.

Background

Having a well-prepared, well-supported principal in every school is vital for ensuring that all students have access to and can succeed in a well-rounded education. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which was signed into law in 2015, provides greater flexibility and significant opportunities for states and districts to identify local needs and build capacity among educators to meet those needs.

NAESP believes that state and local ESSA implementation efforts must include:

Focused efforts and investments to recruit, prepare, and retain principals and provide job-embedded ongoing support;

Accountability systems based on student growth that include multiple measures;

Early childhood education and support for the Pre-K-3 continuum as well as the necessary support for all educators to be effective; and

Full funding for programs proven to provide schools with the means to improve student academic outcomes and fill equity gaps.

Take Action

Title II, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act is the only federal funding stream dedicated to the professional development of teachers and principals, 3 percent of which can be set aside for statewide programs, such as residencies and mentoring and induction programs, to improve principal and school leader capacity. Tell Congress to increase Title II, Part A funding to increase professional development for educators.
