“Personal Care Bags”
Student Council members were encouraged to brainstorm community service ideas. Fifth-grade students chose to create hygiene kits and planned how to gather donations. The advisors then contacted the nonprofit and coordinated with the school. The nonprofit then expanded on the hygiene bag initiative by reaching out to other schools in the urban core. Since both schools were working on similar projects, they decided that collaborating would be mutually beneficial.
“End of Quarter Assemblies”
Each quarter at an assembly, Student Council Members celebrate a variety of accomplishments ranging from welcoming new students, citizenship awards, and celebrating clubs. Students learn how to plan a presentation, noting that much practice is needed to lead a successful assembly. They learn to speak in front of large group and how to keep their attention.
