Projects

“Leadership Mentors”

The Leadership Mentors project is designed to empower leadership students by having them mentor regular students, helping them develop key leadership skills such as communication, goal setting, and decision-making. Through one-on-one mentoring and group activities, leadership students guide their mentees in personal and academic growth while gaining valuable experience in leadership, coaching, and conflict resolution. The project fosters a supportive, collaborative environment where both mentors and mentees can reflect on their strengths, overcome challenges, and work towards their individual goals. Ultimately, the project aims to create a positive ripple effect, strengthening leadership skills and building a stronger, more connected school community.

“Washington Intermediate School (WIS) Football Games Community Service”

This project is a way for our leadership students to provide community service at our football games which occur on Saturdays. Our athletic director is always in need and grateful that we are available to help out. Our leadership students provide help at the snack bar, which is a vendor who sets up at the games. We have at least three or four students helping him out. Our students also volunteer to be the “Chain Gang” in which they are out on the sideline to help move the chain to keep track of the distance to make a first down. These students must be fully aware and pay attention to the officials.

“Washington Intermediate School (WIS) Spirit Through Themes and Teams!”

Each year our school is divided up into 4 different “teams” according to a theme for that year. This year our theme is military, therefore we have a Navy team, Space Force team, Army team, and Air Force team. The entire student population is divided as equally as possible into these four teams according to their seventh period class. Our rallies are at the end of the day, so having them divided up according to their last class makes it very helpful to organize our events.

This structure is designed to foster a sense of community, teamwork, and positive school spirit, where each team works together to represent their military branch throughout the school year. The teams participate in various activities, events, and friendly competitions. A central component of the project is the team points system, where each team earns points for their participation in different events and activities. Points are awarded based on the level of involvement, performance in activities, and team collaboration during rallies and lunchtime activities.

At the end of each quarter, the team with the most points earns a reward. Rewards for the leading team can include items such as Ice Cream Sundae, Otter Pops, Root beer Floats, Popcorn, Shaved Ice, Cotton Candy, etc. The winning team at the end of the quarter is allowed the special privilege of enjoying their reward in our “Sanchez Park” area located at the front of the school near the office. These rewards are designed to recognize and reward the hard work, teamwork, and school spirit shown by the students in each team. By offering these rewards at the end of every quarter, the competition remains engaging and motivating, encouraging continued participation and enthusiasm in the activities throughout the year. This system ensures that each team has the opportunity to be recognized for their efforts, with a sense of accomplishment and healthy competition fueling positive school spirit.

“Washington Intermediate School Leadership Classes”

The main goal of having two Leadership classes here at WIS is to empower these students with skills that will help them become responsible, confident, and effective leaders while also contributing to building a positive school culture and climate through a variety of lunch time activities, rallies, special events, dances, etc. It is our hope that our leadership students learn to model positive behaviors such as respect, responsibility, and inclusivity, which helps to create a supportive and welcoming environment for all.
