Best Practices
1) Assistant Principal’s Role as Instructional Leader: One best practice as an assistant principal is being an Instructional Leader and aiding in Teacher and Staff Development. At Danville Elementary, I make sure to attend the grade level PLCs regularly to help guide unit creation and planning, impart up to date content research as needed, and model or coach teachers around instructional shifts and practices. Developing a positive and joyful school culture while keeping the standard of instruction and learning high allows staff, students, and even families to have fun while focusing on learning. I seek to be collaborative in all educational endeavors to ensure that the staff and students are learning, growing, and feeling supported. My depth of knowledge for curriculum helps me guide teachers in their planning, instructional practices, and assessment of learning. Therefore, I assist staff in understanding where kids have been, what they need to work on currently, and where they are going. My strong data collection and organization assist staff in knowing what Tier 1, 2, and 3 supports can be put in place for students to learn and grow. Together as a team, we are making great strides in closing gaps and making changes to curriculum and assessments that will result in well prepared students moving grade to grade.
2) School Improvement Strategies: Another best practice is helping with developing School Improvement Strategies and improving Parent and Community Relations. I work hard with the staff and families to find ways to improve our school and practices to enhance teacher and student experiences. When I arrived, there were some practices I wanted to add or bring back such as student council, adding a trait and idiom of the week to enhance vocabulary, bringing back school-wide assemblies, creating staff fun to increase moral, updating classrooms and spaces to increase the aesthetics of the building, and introducing our school to Class Dojo to help keep parents connected and informed. I plan academic nights to educate parents on new educational research and changes in instructional practices, as well as to showcase student growth and achievement. In my third year here, I have helped create a positive school climate and culture, as well as build strong relationships with families, staff, and students.
