As the first principal of Dexter K-8 School, Patrick Certion faced a monumental task and many unexpected challenges. After four years overseeing consistent growth at Dexter Elementary, Certion was tapped to facilitate the consolidation of three schools to establish the district’s largest school serving over 1,500 PK-8 students. Far beyond a mere merger of buildings, Certion was tasked with unifying three distinct cultures and realigning systems in time for a new school year. Following a significant set-back in year one, in which the school was rated a Level 1 “F” School, Certion led a rapid turnaround in year two with resilience and collective determination, resulting in a palpable shift in both student and teacher morale. By prioritizing visibility, instructional support, and personal reflection, Certion met the moment, stewarding academic growth and building trust through careful relationship-building and humility. As a result, the school earned a “C” on its next state report card and a Level 5 rating through the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System, the top possible rating. Dexter has since earned the America’s Healthiest School Award for seven consecutive years for promoting the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of students and staff. Certion holds a K-12 Administration Certificate from the University of Tennessee, an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, and an M.A. in Teaching and a B.B.A. from the University of Memphis.
