Why do you think student leadership development is important for all students?
As a middle school student council advisor for the past three years here in the US, I’ve seen how important leadership development is for students. Middle school is a time when students are figuring out who they are and where they belong. Offering leadership opportunities helps them build confidence, find purpose, and learn valuable skills for the future.
Growing up, I was involved in leadership organizations, and those experiences shaped who I am today. I learned how to communicate, collaborate, and make decisions that consider everyone’s needs. These lessons taught me that leadership is about supporting others, not just being in charge. As a student council advisor, I strive to teach my students the same: leadership is about teamwork and empowering others.
Middle school students are at a stage where they are figuring out who they are. Leadership roles give them a sense of purpose and ownership in their school. Through these roles, students learn skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and conflict resolution, which they will use in high school and beyond. Many students I’ve worked with have gone on to be student council leaders in high school, applying the skills they learned in real-life situations.
Student leadership development is important because it helps students build confidence, empathy, and responsibility—skills they will need in the future. By offering leadership opportunities now, we are helping them become the leaders of tomorrow.
As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the power of education to change lives. It is a beacon of hope for those who feel lost in the darkness. My role is to guide my student leaders towards that light, to ensure they understand that their dreams are valid and achievable.
