For the past 12 years, Diane Crockett has served as principal of Brevig Mission School, a rural pre-K-12 institution serving the local, majority-indigenous Inuipiaq community. Because most Brevig Mission teachers are not from the community, Crockett has made it a top priority throughout her tenure to build culturally responsive, low-barrier avenues for family engagement. For example, having noted that reading was not typically a shared home activity for many Brevig Mission families, Crockett and her team developed several initiatives to give parents the tools to support instruction at home while empowering students to track their own progress. Through the Kids Are Awesome program, Brevig Mission blends literacy development and relationship building by engaging parents directly in the intervention process. The success of the program has been multiplied by Crockett’s broader commitment to building an affirming culture that prioritizes trust and emotional safety, integrating elements of SEL, trauma-informed care, and restorative practices. Across all her efforts, Crockett ensures that her teachers are “engaged, confident, and united in purpose” by building teacher confidence and ownership in the professional development process. Before becoming a principal, Crockett taught middle and high school ELA for seven years and was an elementary school teacher at Brevig Mission for nine years. She holds an M.Ed. and Type B Teaching Certificate from University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and a B.S. in Biology from St. Olaf College.
