In his seven years of service as principal of Goshen Intermediate School, Matthew Wentworth has modeled creativity and resilience as core attributes of effective leadership. As an experienced classroom teacher and arts-in-education specialist, Wentworth strikes a careful balance between the roles of advocate and administrator, demonstrating that the two can work in harmony. Wentworth leads with strong instructional and programmatic guidance, advocating for students and staff by removing barriers and fostering collaboration to help everyone thrive. While his innovative and tech-savvy use of instructional data and collaborative relationship-building foster an environment where teachers can excel, Wentworth also builds authentic connections with students to spark joy and create a strong sense of belonging within the school community. Using the Choose Love Movement as the foundation of the school’s SEL framework, Wentworth and the teachers at Goshen Intermediate have implemented the Choose Love Flocks house system to promote the values of courage, gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion. This teacher-led initiative has yielded encouraging gains in attendance, discipline, and engagement at the school. Wentworth holds an Ed.D. from Sage College, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Leadership from SUNY New Paltz, a M.Ed. in Literacy Education from SUNY Oswego, a B.Ed. from SUNY Fredonia, and was recognized in 2007 as the Walmart Teacher of the Year.
