Mental Health Awareness: A Resource Guide for Education Leaders, Families, and Students
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. To recognize this important issue, NAESP has curated resources with strategies to support school leaders and educators, students, and students.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and reducing the stigma around mental health. In the wake of the pandemic, mental health has come to the forefront as we navigate new challenges and changes in our environment. It’s a crucial time for school leaders to focus on mental well-being, not just for themselves, but also for their students, families, and communities.
At NAESP, our commitment to fostering inclusive, socially, and emotionally supportive learning environments is unwavering. We believe that understanding and taking charge of our mental health is an essential part of this mission.
To help you do that, we’ve created a list of resources that cater to education leaders, families and caregivers, and students. We hope these tools will provide insights, strategies, and support as you continue to champion mental health in your schools and communities.

With these resources at your fingertips, we hope you feel empowered to foster a culture of mental well-being, inclusion, and community support.
Before we wrap up, we’d like to share some simple yet powerful self-care tips from the National Institute of Mental Health. Remember, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity, and it looks different for everyone.
- Move your body. Every bit of physical activity counts.
- Nourish yourself. Choose balanced meals and plenty of hydration.
- Prioritize rest. Aim for sufficient, quality sleep.
- Find joy in the little things. Engage in activities that bring you peace and happiness.
- Set boundaries. Learn to say “no” and prioritize your needs.
- Cultivate gratitude. Daily reflections on things you’re thankful for can boost your mood.
- Think positive. Challenge negative thoughts and focus on the good.
- Connect. Maintain meaningful relationships for emotional support. If you haven’t already, join an NAESP Community of Practice.
As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s remember that mental health is a year-round commitment and continue to spread awareness, offer support, and advocate for mental health, today and every day.
