School rewards kids for good behavior and community spirit.

Kids attending school at Brookwood Elementary in Enterprise, Alabama, know that being on their best behavior and helping out at school are their own reward. But a little recognition—in the form of fun prizes—never hurts. That’s why principal N. Waller Martin created the Rockstar Slip Awards program.
The Rockstar Slip Awards reward students for acts of good behavior, leadership, and kindness displayed throughout the year. Any staff member, from principal to custodian, can nominate a student for any achievement that contributes to the school community. The form is easy to complete and comes in triplicate, with a copy going to the office, the nominating staff member, and the student.
Staff members write the student’s name, date, and their name, and check from a list of options included on the form: being respectful and courteous, helping keep the school clean and safe, and so on. There’s also a space for write-in comments.
In the spring, the school holds a schoolwide assembly and places Rockstar Slips in a hopper. School “celebrities” such as school board members, central office staff, political leaders, and volunteers pick slips from the hopper, awarding eight to 10 prizes. Prizes are on display prior to the assembly for students to see, and the local media is invited to cover the event. The three staffers who issued the most Rockstar Slips get a special prize.
The Rockstar Slip program has decreased disciplinary referrals and increased attendance. Students enjoy earning Rockstar Slips for a chance to win prizes. Everyone at the school wants to do what’s right, but students tend to go the extra mile when they are rewarded, Martin says—not unlike adults.
