NAESP has several open positions on its Board of Directors. Do you have what it takes to step up your volunteer leadership game? If so, we want you to apply.
As a principal, you are the boots on the ground in schools every day. Likely, you’re the first person at the school in the morning and the last one to leave at night. Why? It’s your passion. Because you eat, sleep, and breathe education, you understand the challenges that other principals face and offer an unmatched wealth of knowledge when it comes to leading your faculty and students, so who better than you to guide NAESP in its efforts to support principals?
What type of leaders are we looking for? Passionate. Diverse. Innovative. We want principals who are interested in taking that extra step to be volunteer leaders at a national level. Principals who want to advocate for their profession and support their peers.
If you’ve attended the NAESP Pre-K-8 Principals Conference, or maybe even led a session or two, we want you. If you have stepped up in your community as a volunteer leader, we want you. If you’ve hosted a webinar for NAESP or have even been inspired by one, we want you. If you believe in what NAESP stands for, you’re the person we’re looking for.
We want board members who have strong opinions about the future of education and ideas about how to take NAESP to the next level as we work together to support education professionals and make a difference in the lives of children.

Open Positions
NAESP is seeking outstanding candidates for several open positions. The positions and application deadlines are listed below.
Vice President
- The term of office for NAESP officers is three years beginning Aug. 1 of the first year and ending July 31 of the third year.
- Upon election to office, NAESP officers serve the first year as vice president, the second year as president-elect, and the third year as president.
- Application Deadline: Oct. 1, 2020
- Candidates for the ballot are selected by the NAESP Nominating Committee during its November meeting.
- The vice president election occurs Feb. 23 – March 5, 2021.
Directors in Zones 5, 7, and 9
- Three-year term of office beginning Aug. 1, 2021–July 31, 2024
- Determine your Zone eligibility based on your region
- Application Deadline: Nov. 1, 2020
Director at Large, Minority
- Three-year term of office beginning Aug. 1, 2021–July 31, 2024
- Application Deadline: Nov. 1, 2020
What You’ll Gain
On a professional level, you’ll gain insight to better serve on a school district’s policy committee and strengthen relationships with school board and community members. You’ll be able to share with your school district “hot off the press” news, sometimes before they know about it. Aside from being a leading voice for high-quality public education for all children, you’ll also have a hand in influencing education policy, like the Every Student Succeeds Act, while it is being written instead of reacting after bills are signed into law. On a personal level, you will serve as key role models and representatives for the profession, learn organizational planning and budgeting, and hone public speaking skills. Being an NAESP board member will help you better understand yourself as a leader and helps you grow outside the parameters of your current and immediate lens.
Plus, it garners recognition for your school and district. NAESP board members enhance the reputation and reach of their respective schools and districts through their leadership and influence on issues of policy and practice that aim to keep our nation’s schools on track and headed in the right direction. It gives your school district its own stakeholder in the national arena.
A lot is happening in the world, with a global pandemic completely changing the landscape of education and a renewed focus on combating widespread racial injustice. Most of us are asking what we can do to help. It’s a priority of NAESP’s to tackle these issues head on, and we need a diverse group of leaders to help us lead this charge.
