A former middle-level principal, William Brulotte accepted his current elementary principalship “as a personal challenge to help people, a community, and a school reach its potential,” he says. Since becoming principal of Perrine Elementary four years ago, he has helped the rural K-6 school reach new heights. As his first undertaking, he worked with a reluctant staff to establish data-driven decision making at the school. Brulotte showed teachers how to decipher and use student test results to improve instruction in addition to using the data to evaluate students’ learning. Brulotte also focused on team building among teachers. As trust grew, staff members began to share their best teaching strategies with each other. Teachers now discuss best practices to help all 756 students during weekly meetings that include each teacher team, Brulotte, and the school’s reading coach. Brulotte uses these forums to air concerns and brainstorm solutions with each of his school’s teaching teams. During Brulotte’s tenure, community involvement at Perrine Elementary also has grown. A grant-funded after-school program run in cooperation with the local Boys and Girls Club now ensures that parents can keep their children in a safe, educational environment in the afternoons. Another grant secured under Brulotte’s leadership has enabled the school to implement a full-day kindergarten class for underprivileged children. Brulotte earned a B.S. and an M.Ed. at Idaho State University.
