Susan Anglemyer embraced her “professional dream” last year when she opened her district’s newest school. “The once-in-a-lifetime experience of being involved in every aspect of establishing a new building was an exciting professional challenge,” she says. When she became principal of Wilma Upchurch Elementary in 2008, Anglemyer was serving as principal of another elementary school in the district. So she essentially held two principalships for a year. She interviewed and hired staff members, selected furniture, ordered supplies, and developed plans for the new school while managing the other. The new school serves 287 K-5 students in an urban setting. During the 10 years of her previous principalship at Mari Sandoz Elementary, Anglemyer witnessed significant demographic changes that began to negatively impact academic achievement. The school became the host of an English language learner program, with students bussed from four feeder schools. When the site fell short of its schoolwide academic goal for the first time two years ago, Anglemyer led instructional changes. Resulting improvements in student performance enabled the school to meet its goal last year. Anglemyer also supervised the implementation of her district’s first Title I preschool for English language learners and established intensive staff development to meet the new learners’ needs. She holds a B.S. from Kansas State University and an M.S. from Fort Hays State University in Kansas.
