Janice Rodriguez has served her district as a teacher and an administrator for 17 years. In her five years as a principal at Ocotillo Elementary, Rodriguez has led by example, modeling daily the values and skills of effective teachers and learners. Strong stakeholder relationships are at the center of Rodriguez’s approach to leadership, always an open-door policy with families and cultivating a culture of feedback by proactively seeking input through multiple channels to inform her decision-making. Rodriguez never shies away from a challenge or hesitates to roll up her sleeves, even if it means taking on a responsibility not typically associated with a principal. For example, she obtained a commercial drivers license to help transport students during a building renovation. This is just one of the many ways that Rodriguez has built credibility, respect, and trust in the community through her demonstrated commitment to parents, staff, and students. This commitment also shines through in how Rodriguez strategically leverages her classroom experience and insights to ensure the best possible results for students and high professional satisfaction for her team, through mentorship, professional development, and staff well-being. Beyond her dedication to the academic, social, and emotional wellbeing of her students, Rodriguez serves her community on the local city council and school board. She holds a bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University and a master’s degree from the University of the Southwest.
