In Angela Murphy-Osborne’s illustrious 25-year career as principal, she has opened two schools, planned the opening of another, and helped turn failing or nearly failing schools into models of academic success. Murphy-Osborne helped a school that had earned an F letter grade achieve A status in just one academic year. Murphy-Osborne has replicated this success in her current post at Hamlin Elementary School, where her team has closed the achievement gap in just two short years, proof, she believes, “that with leadership, attitude, effective teaching, and support of the community, all students can learn, even if English is not their first language.” Key to this success is Murphy-Osborne’s commitment to language access and her hands-on and data-driven approach to instruction that relies on the insights and participation of parents and family members to unify the school community around student success. Intervention starts with collaborative assessments of every student to tailor instruction, which Murphy-Osborne supports through observation, actionable feedback, and celebrations of academic and professional success. All Hamlin students benefit from a schoolwide intervention and enrichment block and have access to free on-site tutoring services daily. Murphy-Osborne was a classroom teacher for seven years before becoming a principal. She holds a bachelor’s in Special Education from Lock Haven University, and as well as master’s and doctorate degrees in School Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Murphy-Osborne is also a two-time NAESP National Distinguished Principal, having also received the award in 2015.
