“Your actions say it all!” a teacher told Sonia Carrington in explaining why it’s obvious that Carrington has high expectations for teachers and students. Carrington’s two goals in leading teachers at Rocky Ridge Elementary since 2002 have been to empower them professionally and to demonstrate appreciation for their dedication. She meets the first goal by creating and sustaining a professional learning community at her suburban K-5 school. The professional development opportunities and training time have paid off with tremendous gains in student achievement. Carrington meets her second goal as she regularly recognizes her faculty’s accomplishments in personal notes, e-mails, and schoolwide celebrations. Carrington shows her high expectations and support for Rocky Run’s 534 students through school programs such as one she created for fourth and fifth graders to demonstrate talents. She promotes student leadership through a Principal’s Award for Leadership and Leadership Academy, and she uses a weekly Teams Win Award to celebrate class projects. Another high priority in Carrington’s principalship is partnering with parents and the community to help students succeed. She not only supports her school’s parent-teacher association, but also includes parents on school improvement committees and invites them to frequently visit the school. Carrington holds a B.S. from the University of Houston, an M.A. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and an Ed.D. from Samford University in Alabama.
