Ruth G. King
Homer Elementary School
Homer Central School District
Homer, New York

Ruth King has overseen three renovations of her rural school during her tenure at the site since 1992. Of the most recent $16 million initiative, she says, “We have been working on this project for more than three years, from the planning to the building of a dramatically improved facility that will have a real impact on our learning environment.” King appreciates her staff, students, and community for dealing well with adjustments around the renovations. More important, she is proud of the community’s willingness to support such improvements in order to expand learning opportunities for the 420 kindergarten through grade 2 students served by the school. King also has overseen much academic growth at Homer Elementary during her principalship. For the gains, she credits the teamwork of teachers focused on improving instruction, particularly the early literacy program. Today Homer Elementary receives visits from staff members from other school districts who want to learn how to replicate the successes. King counts the character education program that she spearheaded at her school among her key accomplishments as a principal. She says the process of developing the program brought her staff and community together. The positive energy from that collaboration “continues to permeate our school,” she says. King has been a principal for nearly two decades. She holds a B.A. and an M.S. from State University of New York at Cortland.
