Roberta Jean Schmidt“The major focus of my daily efforts is to organize the school environment to support successful teaching and learning,” says Bobbie Schmidt. In her first year as a principal, Schmidt spearheaded an initiative to bring community volunteers into her school to provide daily, one-on-one math tutoring for students. With the program in place, her school has tracked consistent improvements in students’ math achievement. The success propelled the program’s expansion to other district schools. Schmidt has led Richmond Elementary for seven years. The suburban K-6 school has an enrollment of 280. Key among Schmidt’s accomplishments is the systematic plan she established for her school’s continuous improvement. The plan has fostered a consistent focus by all school staff members on reading, writing, mathematics, and student character. As a result, they have measured steady student growth in each of the focus areas. Data analysis and instructional planning activities also have promoted staff collaboration and professional learning. In leading a team of Richmond Elementary staff members and parents focused on student wellness, Schmidt has worked to create a sustainable school program promoting healthful living choices. The program has received state recognition. Health magazine also named Richmond Elementary one of the nation’s “Top Five Healthy Schools.” Schmidt earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and her master’s degree from Lesley College in Massachusetts.
