Paul Wenger for Vice President 2019

Paul Wenger

Candidate for 2019 Vice President

Principal of Jordan Creek Elementary in West Des Moines, Iowa

"NAESP – Now and Into the Future"

My leadership journey includes 19 years as an active, engaged member of NAESP. I have served NAESP on the Membership Committee, Nominating Committee, as Federal Relations Coordinator and State Representative, and the last 3 years as the Zone 6 Director on the NAESP Board of Directors. I am honored and humbled that my colleagues in Iowa and across Zone 6 have trusted me with these amazing leadership opportunities. As a member of the NAESP Leadership Team I promise to  lead with an energy and passion that is focused on taking care of our profession, supporting the needs of principals, enlarging our circle of influence, and doing what is right for kids – always.

Advocacy
I have a strong commitment to NAESP, the principalship, and understand the importance of an effective NAESP presence at the national level. As a part of the NAESP Leadership Team, I am committed to building our capacity as the leading voice for elementary and middle level principals We must continue to raise the volume of the elementary and middle level principal voices in the conversation about reforming and refining the agenda for public education.

Leadership
I personally want to see the development of highly effective leaders who:
aren’t afraid to fail and see mistakes as an opportunity to learn;
maintain composure in difficult situations and circumstances;
build strong relationships;
work hard to build teams who think beyond themselves and embrace a common vision and mission;
communicate effectively;
maintain a positive work-life balance; and finally,
stay connected to the people they serve!

Networking and Membership
The principalship can be a lonely job. It is critical that all beginning principals have mentors to assist with questions, concerns, and serve as a sounding board regarding the many challenges of the job. Veteran principals must commit to supporting new principals by sharing knowledge, insight and advice.  As an organization we must continue to develop and support principals across this nation. I commit to partnering with the NAESP Board of Directors and state leaders to build more effective principal coalitions across our nation. Building a strong professional network will provide the profession a fighting chance to reverse the alarming trend of too many early career principals leaving the profession.
Because effective organizations depend on a strong, vibrant and engaged membership, growing membership in NAESP will always be important. This requires energetic leaders with the capacity to build a culture of inclusiveness and develop healthy relationships across a wide spectrum of our profession. I am excited to bring my energy and work hard on behalf of NAESP to build the network and promote the benefits of membership to all school leaders.

I would be honored to serve as the next Vice-President of NAESP and I will work diligently on behalf of our nation’s school principals to protect the promise of a quality public education for all, in a profession I absolutely love where I know kids really do come first! Thank you for your consideration.
