Paul R. Bohn
Portal Elementary School
Papillion–La Vista Public School District
La Vista, Nebraska

Paul Bohn is not only a great principal, but he also takes pride in having “helped grow some really great principals.” He finds great satisfaction in encouraging teachers to become principals and mentoring them throughout their graduate training for the job. He also has celebrated as they obtained their first principalships. For his part, he assumed his current principalship, Portal Elementary School, in 2009. The suburban school has an enrollment of 498 kindergarten through grade 6 students. Bohn has led four elementary schools in 17 years as a principal. In his previous school, he led the staff to make great strides in cultivating a positive school climate and supporting student learning. Academic results improved significantly in just a few years. But Bohn credits the teachers for the gains. “I put the right people in the right place,” he says, “so as to provide students with the best possible educational opportunities.” Bohn’s career in education has included four years of service as a superintendent. A highlight of his experiences in that role was announcing, during a high school matriculation ceremony, the name of a graduating student who had struggled with learning and behavior problems and a parent’s death. Bohn had worked hard to help the boy for more than 13 years in the district. Bohn holds a B.S. and an M.Ed. from the University of Nebraska.
