Julie J. Trepa
Paul Norton Elementary School
Bettendorf Community School District
Bettendorf, Iowa

At Paul Norton Elementary School, principal Julie Trepa is known for her thoughtfulness, rigorous standards, and dedicated professionalism. In an already-successful district, she maintains high expectations for students and staff alike. The essence of her vision is consistent improvement, which she has accomplished by implementing a multi-tiered support system and grade-level data teams. The students at Paul Norton have achieved 92 percent proficiency or greater on reading and math in all grade levels. Along with teacher Kellie Smart, Trepa was featured on the front of a local newspaper for their success with the first grade data team. Furthermore, Trepa sets an example for her students by demonstrating professionalism and a true belief in the value of knowledge. “Mrs. Trepa is constantly learning. It is very clear that she does a lot of research and is always seeking out best practices and ways to enhance the school,” says PTA President Rhonda Nelson. A few of these best practices include Trepa's implementation of a successful Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program and the use of the research-based tool HumanEx to monitor the school's social climate. Recently, Trepa was recognized as Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa. She holds a B.A. from the University of Montana as well as an M.A. and Educational Specialist degree from the University of Iowa.
