Paula Southard-Stevens is the principal of two small schools in western New Hampshire—Charlestown Middle School (CMS), which serves grades 6-8, and North Charlestown Community School (NCCS), which serves grades 1-5. She leads both schools with a clear vision and the ability to build trusting relationships. “She never loses sight of what matters most, which is the success of our students,” says Lead Teacher Mary Lord. Recently, Stevens and her colleagues utilized the SWIFT process (School-Wide Integrated Framework for Transformation) to renew the schools' vision. In the process of working toward a common purpose, Stevens involves all stakeholders. Parents and community members participate in the schools' “site-based committee” to provide insight about building issues, technology needs, and instructional practices. Stevens also partners with the PTA, local Rotary Club, and the Historical Society to work toward student achievement. In 2010, Stevens was named “Administrator of the Year” by the NH Association of Educational Office Professionals. In 2012, NCCS received the “Healthy Eating Active Living” award from NH Excellence in Education and the “Circle of Excellence” award from the Commissioner of Education. Stevens belongs to several organizations including the NH Association of School Principals and the New England League of School Principals. She holds a B.S from the University of Vermont, a Teaching Certificate from Franklin Pierce College, and an M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction and an Educational Leadership Certification from Keene State College.
