JoAnne Roberts has been a principal in Norfolk Public Schools for the last twenty-five years. Since 2009, she has been the principal of not just one school, but two: Grant Elementary (K-4) and Lincoln Elementary (Pre-K-4), with a combined population of 415 students. Lincoln is the site of Norfolk's first public Montessori program (which Roberts helped to develop) as well as Little Panthers Preschool. In addition to her current roles, Roberts also piloted the district's first special education inclusion programs. Shared leadership is one component of her success. Under her guidance, staff analyze data and take charge of Professional Learning Community meetings. Recently, Roberts also implemented Data Binders, allowing students to track their own progress. Communication is key to Roberts’s ability to maintain a powerful presence in both buildings. In order to stay accessible, she uses a variety of technologies including blogs, social media, and Google docs. She works closely with the community to provide basic needs for students; her partners include Coats for Kids, the Red Cross, and Heartland Food Bank, among other organizations. Roberts recently won a Longevity Award from the Nebraska Association of Elementary School Principals for twenty-five years of service. She is a representative for the Special Education Advisory Council and Secretary for the Lutheran Community Hospital Association. She holds a B.S. from Dana College and an M.S. from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
