Fairness, professionalism, and a focus on 21st Century learning skills are just a few of the qualities that have made Brad Olinger a successful principal during his eight years at Flandreau Elementary School. In his time there, Olinger has implemented multiple programs to ensure equal learning opportunities for all of his students. Flandreau's Response to Intervention program, which has led 80 percent of students to score “benchmark” or above in recent assessments, has become a model for nearby districts. Olinger also acquired a $5,000 grant from United Way to begin a “Ready to Start” summer program, a four-week preparatory course for incoming kindergartners who have had little or no experience in an educational setting. He has worked hard to integrate the Common Core Standards by providing ongoing professional development and carefully protecting student learning time. Under Olinger's leadership, Flandreau is currently undergoing a one-to-one iPad initiative with the ultimate goal of pairing each student with a device. As a result, students are finding new ways to collaborate, create, and engage with each other. Olinger is the district's Curriculum Director and is highly involved in the local community as a Sunday School teacher, youth basketball coach, and a member of the city's Planning and Zoning Committee. He holds a B.S. from Dakota State University and a Master's in Leadership from the University of Sioux Falls.
