Angela Murphy-Osborne
Palmetto Elementary School
Orange County Public Schools
Orlando, Florida

When Angela Murphy-Osborne arrived at Palmetto Elementary School in 2013, it was categorized as an “F” school with high teacher turnover. In her first year alone, Osborne was able to accomplish what only few have done in the history of Florida Public Schools: She raised Palmetto's grade from an “F” to an “A,” inspiring students, staff, and administrators to believe not only in themselves, but in the future of the school as well. Osborne lives by the mantra, “I would never ask anyone to do anything I wouldn't do myself.” One way she has demonstrated this is by working with volunteers to clean, paint, and landscape the Palmetto campus before her official start there in 2013. “She actually mowed the lawn,” says Palmetto Writing Coach Allison Olszewski. Osborne has also succeeded because of her deep understanding of student motivation; participation in after-school tutoring programs and high test scores earn them a trip to LEGOLAND or an Orlando Magic game. It is safe to say that her strategies have been successful, with proficiency levels in writing and math increasing by 40 and 32 percent, respectively. Osborne was named Orange County Principal of the Year in  2012 and 2014 and Florida Principal of the Year in 2015. She holds a B.S. from Lock Haven University as well as an M.A. and Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University.
