Kimberly Mitchell is the seven-year principal of Bonner Springs Elementary (BSE) School. In that time, she has attracted students and their families with her genuine passion and outstanding management skills. Mitchell has developed numerous projects and partnerships that have succeeded at increasing student achievement. During her tenure, for example, the proficiency level on state assessments has increased from 63 to 90 percent. One of the many projects that Mitchell has implemented is the school's Wellness Initiative. Featuring daily movement breaks, healthy snacks, and community Wellness Nights, the initiative is now a model program for the state. She also secured a Lowe's grant to build an innovative outdoor learning area complete with walking trails open for both student and community use. Mitchell understands that it is not possible to lead alone; there are multiple staff teams that help to accomplish particular goals including the “Show Me the Money” crew, which seeks and writes grants for various projects, and the “Character Counts” crew, which focuses on student behavior. The local community also shows support through programs such as Watch D.O.G.S. and “Business Buddies.” Mitchell is highly involved in local organizations as a member of the New Century Club, Friends of the Library, and other groups. Mitchell holds a B.S., an M.A., and a School Leadership Endorsement from Emporia State University.
