Patrick Mackin
Slidell Junior High School
St. Tammany Parish School District
Slidell, Louisiana

When Patrick Mackin arrived at Slidell Junior High (SJH) School in 2008, it was considered an average school with a "C" rating. Since then, Mackin has worked hard to be a "leader of leaders" and engage the students of SJH by celebrating their successes at every opportunity. Because of his efforts, SJH now has a "B" rating, and students have achieved the highest School Performance Score (SPS) in history at 105.4 points. Mackin credits his accomplishments with his ability to foster collaboration; in his six years as principal, he has created effective teacher-leaders who participate in peer-to-peer mentoring, annual staff retreats, team-taught inclusion classes, and Professional Learning Committees to discuss student progress. The Tiger Family advisory groups and ZAP (Zeros Aren't Permitted) program help to elevate standards and invite students to be proactive in their own learning and growth. Mackin’s emphasis on student recognition, exemplified by an annual student showcase and a newly-developed academic pep rally, has allowed achievement levels to rise during his tenure. Students are also engaged through groups like "Connect for Success," "Leading Ladies," and other extracurricular clubs. He holds a B.S. from the University of New Orleans and an M.Ed. from Southeastern Louisiana University.
