Pamela R. Johnson
Falling Creek Elementary
Chesterfield County Public Schools
Richmond, Virginia

Pamela Johnson has been principal of Falling Creek Elementary School (FCES) for the past seven years. In addition to increasing test scores, she has been able to build a collaborative culture with mutual respect and trust among all members of the school community. When she arrived at FCES, Johnson worked diligently to follow a team approach and embrace the diverse range of skills that her staff had to offer. With efforts including the Design for Excellence team and Professional Learning Communities, teachers now take responsibility for student success both in and out of the school building. Johnson has also encouraged a variety of instructional approaches such as Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol and Kagan Structures in order to support different learning styles. Her regularly scheduled “In But Out Days” allow her to visit every classroom and actively participate in teaching and learning. Because of Johnson, students have become active citizens of the community—for example, by singing at local hospitals or collecting pennies for lung cancer patients. By hosting back-to-school cookouts, driving the school's Bookmobile, and providing designated “Homework Day” periods for students without computer access, she has gained both interest and respect from parents. Currently, Johnson serves as a Mentor for NAESP and is also a member of the state and county principal organizations, VAESP and CAESP. She holds a B.S. from Morgan State University and a M.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University.
