Carol E. Hahn
Bellows Spring Elementary School
Howard County Public School System
Ellicott City, Maryland

Although Carol Hahn has only been principal at Bellows Spring Elementary (BSE) for one year, she is well-prepared for the role. Before coming to BSE, Hahn had been a principal for six years, an assistant principal for four years, and a teacher for 37 years.  Since 1993 she has worked within the Howard County Public School System. In each of these positions, Hahn was praised for her problem-solving abilities, her professionalism, and her excellent communication skills. She understands that in order to be an effective leader, she must continually gather feedback, analyze it, and make adjustments as quickly as possible. She also understands that collaboration is necessary; everyone's voice must be heard. For example, Hahn recently used feedback from a parent survey to develop a community outreach program where students work with groups such as the local fire company and VA patients on a monthly basis. Hahn also exhibits a high level of professionalism and provides numerous development opportunities for teachers including workshops and long-range planning meetings. She has successfully involved parents with frequent correspondence such as biweekly newsletters, "Friday Folders," and "Chat and Chew" sessions. Parents appreciate her open door policy and are eager to volunteer at school events. Hahn is the Howard County Representative for MAESP; she holds a B.S. from Penn State University, an M.A. from Texas Christian University, and an M.Ed. from Loyola University of Maryland.
