Brenda Creel
Alta Vista Elementary School
Laramie County School District #1
Cheyenne, Wyoming

In the past twelve years, Brenda Creel has been a principal in three different Laramie County schools. In 2013, she was asked to leave her position at the highest-performing school in the district to become the leader of Alta Vista Elementary. Since then, she has been able to make huge gains in student achievement with her natural talent for mentorship and ability to build meaningful relationships. “She is relentless in her pursuit of supporting 'newbies' and colleagues alike,” says fellow principal Margee Robertson. At Alta Vista, Creel provides numerous leadership opportunities for her staff with the Collaborative Decision-Making Team, the Building Intervention Team, and Professional Learning Community teams. She takes pride in being a true team member: “I participate in all of the staff development that I expect from my crew,” says Creel. She reaches out to parents with events such as back-to-school ice cream socials and informational PTO forums. To maintain visibility, Creel typically eats lunch with her students and regularly participates in class activities—for example, playing the piano in orchestra class. In 2014, she was chosen to serve on the Select Principals Panel for the National Assessment of Educational Progress; she was also named 2014's “Wyoming Woman of Influence” by the Wyoming Business Report. Creel holds a Bachelor's Degree and a Principal Endorsement from the University of Wyoming as well as a Master's from Lesley College.
