Catarina Song Chen has been the director of The American School of Belo Horizonte (Escola Americana de Belo Horizonte, (EABH)) in Brazil since 2009. Before then, the school's population struggled to reach 150 students—but because of Chen's leadership, there are currently over 350 Pre-K through twelfth-grade students at EABH with over 200 students on the waiting list. Contributing to her success is the ability to create a warm, collaborative culture based on well-rounded instruction and a strong sense of engagement. In the past five years, teachers have completed over 14,000 hours of school-sponsored training to ensure that their strategies are effective. By using differentiated instruction, skilled specialists, and a unique blend of standards (the IB Framework, the Common Core, and the Brazilian PNC standards), Chen has been able to consistently support students of all skill levels. She encourages students to be proactive about their growth by having them set goals, conduct self-assessments, and reflect on their own data. In addition to English, Chen also speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean, enabling her to communicate with the diverse range of EABH students which represent over twenty different countries. Chen is the former President of the Association of American Schools in Brazil and currently serves as an External Review Team Member for AdvancED. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Master's in Administration from Pepperdine University.
