Emil Carafa, Jr.
Washington Elementary School
Lodi School District
Lodi, New Jersey

In his twenty-three years at Washington Elementary School, Principal Emil Carafa has created a community where change is embraced and students are well-prepared for their futures. During his time there, he has successfully implemented the Common Core State Standards and realigned the curriculum to reflect 21st Century learning skills; students participate in writing labs, science labs, and a county-wide STEM program to enrich their creative thinking skills. At Washington, Carafa also maintains a highly active PTA which has secured the funds for students to visit science centers, museums, the State Capitol, and more. He has built successful partnerships with the local police and hospital in order to provide safety programs. Every year, Carafa also invites parents, community members, and even local government officials to participate in Read Across America Day and read to the students of Washington. Carafa also extends his knowledge beyond the school. As a member of the Educator Leaders Cadre, he has given numerous workshops on the Common Core and PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessments throughout the state; he has also testified at a hearing of the Assembly Education Committee on PARCC. Carafa is highly involved in the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, having served as its president from 2012 to 2013. He holds a B.A. and an M.A. in Education from New Jersey City State College.
