Jasmine L. Briedwell
Lake Contrary Elementary
St. Joseph School District
St. Joseph, Missouri

Six years ago, Jasmine Briedwell became principal of Lake Contrary Elementary School in Western Missouri. Since then, she has successfully developed a collaborative culture where all stakeholders feel valuable. Leading with the vision of “Dream, Believe, Achieve,” Briedwell encourages teachers to learn from each other by implementing Instructional Rounds, data teams, and professional development days. She treats parents as equal partners and gives them a voice through the Family Involvement Committee. “We always leave [her office] genuinely feeling like what we had to say mattered,” say parents Will and Crystal Stuck. With the help of multiple grants, Briedwell also started the district's first community garden which generated over 900 pounds of produce in its first year. Because of the project, students not only receive healthy foods; they also learn the importance of helping others. Briedwell's efforts have obviously been successful, as students achieved double digit gains in the MAP test during her time at Lake Contrary. Prior to being a principal, she was a teacher, an instructional coach, and an assistant principal. Briedwell is a board member in several organizations including the Missouri Advisory Council of Certification for Educators, the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals, and the Missouri State Teachers Association. She holds a B.S. from Missouri Western State University, an M.S.Ed. from Northwest Missouri State University, and an Ed.D. from Baker University.
