Donna J. Boles
Perkins-Tryon Intermediate School
Perkins-Tryon Public Schools
Perkins, Oklahoma

In her six years as Principal of Perkins-Tryon Intermediate School (serving grades 3-5), Donna Boles has developed a thoughtful, generous, and effective approach to increasing student achievement. Prior to becoming principal, Boles was a teacher at Perkins-Tryon for fourteen years and was well aware of student data trends. One of her first tasks as principal was restructuring the daily schedule to allow for additional math instruction. As a result, 38 percent of students scored “advanced” on the math portion of the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test last year. To improve reading skills, Boles conducts after-school programs and works personally with at-risk students every Saturday. She has incorporated “pull-out” sessions and software programs for extra support and enrichment. She works with groups including Partners in Education, 4 Kids & Community, and local churches to ensure that every student has access to basic necessities. For Boles, it is also important that students have a sense of pride. Every year, she designs a new “smart tee” shirt for all students; every month, she gathers the shirts and irons on “achievement” patches to reward them for various accomplishments. Boles is the Director of Gifted & Talented as well as the Director of Professional Development for the district. She holds a B.S. from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, an M.A. in School Administration from Northeastern State University, and a National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Mathematics.
