Ramsey Magnet School of Science
Coeur d’Alene School District #271
Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

With a vision to “foster independent thinkers who develop a curiosity about the world around them and a passion for lifelong learning,” Ramsey Magnet School of Science has flourished under the six-year leadership of Principal Anna M. Wilson.  Since then, the Title I, grade one through five school of 656 students has consistently surpassed state goals on standardized tests.  High test scores---including 99 percent proficiency in reading for third through fifth grades--- have earned Ramsey four out of five stars on the Idaho Star Rating System for the past two years.  The school was designated a Magnet School of Science in 2010 in recognition of its success in providing students hands-on, inquiry-based cross-curricular learning opportunities which are col-laboratively designed by teachers.  “Our students think like scientists,” says Wilson.  Professional development is central to Ramsey’s success, and Wilson attends all of the same sessions as her staff to customize support for their individual needs---whether that means providing supplies and resources or modeling lessons and strategies.  Wilson accelerated STEM training through a NASA partner program, inviting all district teachers to participate.  Parent involvement includes volunteer dad tutoring, PTO events, and an Advisory Committee comprised of par-ents, community members, business partners, and University of Idaho liaisons.  In 2013, Ramsey was named an Idaho Distinguished School and a National Title I Distinguished School.  Wilson’s superintendent describes her as “a strong, visionary leader.”  Her credentials include an A.A. in General Studies from North Idaho College, a B.A. in Education from Eastern Washington University, and an M.A. in Education Leadership from the University of Idaho.
