“I make it my goal to keep my students safe, happy, and fulfilled on every level,” says Tony P. Sinanis, principal of Cantiague Elementary School. Recognitions during his six-year tenure as principal of the kindergarten through fifth grade school reflect his success. In 2012, Cantiague was named a National Blue Ribbon School based on years of high performance. Sinanis credits an increase in staff commitment and collective capacity-building for the positive effects on student performance. With differentiated instruction as a primary goal for each student, Sinanis continues to raise the bar by launching two new initiatives this year. One initiative includes book clubs to help every student develop the skills to navigate text and to read critically with deeper comprehension. The second initiative involves the increased presence of technology throughout all learning experiences. IPads and web-based resources such as Prezi, Glogster, and Animoto encourage kids to develop 21st century skills through creating their own book trailers and other content. Recognizing that trust and community respect underlie effective leadership, Sinanis lives by key practices including remembering names, making school business transparent, using social media to “flatten the walls of the school,” and being fair and consistent with all stakeholders. In 2013, Sinanis was rewarded with the title of National 2013 Elementary School Principal of the year by the Bammy’s Academy of Education Arts and Sciences. Sinanis holds a B.S. from New York University, an M.A. in Education Technology and an Advanced Certificate in Administration from the New York Institute of Technology, and an Ed.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
