Julie L. Raschen
Brooks Elementary School
Coweta County School System
Newnan, Georgia

With high expectations and a “no excuses” attitude, Principal Julie L. Raschen earned her former Title I elementary school a state award for the greatest gains in meeting and exceeding standards.  Named principal of the newly opened prekindergarten through fifth grade Brooks Elementary School in 2009, Raschen set the same tone and climate when creating a unified community of students from four redistricted schools and staff from seven different locations.  Raschen is an active participant in all areas of the school, from distributing early morning hugs to the school’s 674 students to assessing kindergarten fluency or building levees with fifth-graders as part of a STEM challenge.  With a risk-free, hands-on learning environment, Brooks’ is a climate where students can apply skills in STEAM and other areas in real world contexts.  Parent involvement is also high, with more than thirty parents a day volunteering to participate in poetry, the media center, drama and core curricular tutoring activities.  Partnerships with the Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center and local businesses offer applied career and technical training.  The result is high student achievement, with more than 43 percent of third through fifth graders meeting, and 56 percent exceeding, state standards in core curricular areas. Raschen’s degrees include a B.S. from Georgia Southern University, an M.A. from the State University of West Georgia, and an Ed. S. and Ed.D. in Education from Samford University.
