Jason M. McGlone
Prichard Elementary School
Carter County Schools
Grayson, Kentucky

In his nine years as principal, Jason M. McGlone has transformed Pritchard Elementary School into a 21st century learning environment focused on strong community, clear expectations, and a strategic, individualized approach to student achievement. With the understanding that effective individuals mean a more effective group, staff receive training in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and each year students begin with lessons based on the seven habits to lay groundwork for a personal sense of accountability. McGlone has created an open school atmosphere where professional discourse is valued and respected, and all personnel are involved in the learning process. Each homeroom has a fifty-five minute block of time for individual and small group interventions targeted to each of the 728 learners’ skill levels, and a recent initiative pairs struggling readers with an in-house mentor from among the school’s administrative, guidance, intervention, or instructional assistant departments. McGlone has also instituted a technology program with 100 percent school-wide wifi access and the latest videoconferencing and virtual field trip technology. Evidence of the success of McGlone’s vision includes 2012-2013 high stakes test data showing a 42 percent increase in fifth grade math scores and a 45 percent increase in fifth grade reading scores. As a result of being rated in the 96th percentile on a VAL-ED survey, McGlone has also been named a Distinguished Principal. McGlone holds a B.S. from Eastern Kentucky University and an M.A. in Instructional Leadership and Superintendent Certificate from Morehead State University.
