William H. Seward Elementary School
Kenai Peninsula Borough School District
Seward, Alaska

Personal relationships with students, educators, parents and community members are key to Principal David F. Kingsland’s success at William H. Seward Elementary School. Kingsland credits hiring and retaining exceptional staff and a broad range of community partnerships as reasons behind the numerous recognitions the school has received during his tenure. Among those achievements are the Alaska Performance Incentive Program Award in 2007 and 2009, the NCLB Blue Ribbon School Award in 2008, and the USDA Healthy US Schools Bronze Award in 2011. “In the same way teachers provide feedback to students, I provide feedback to teachers,” says Kingsland, who regularly drops into classrooms for quick observations and conversations. Encouraging leadership and collaboration, Kingsland’s staff makes team decisions on such topics as professional development, instructional strategies, and resource-sharing. A strong principal-student connection is also fostered as Kingsland meets every morning bus and individually greets students entering school doors. Kingsland also goes the extra mile to welcome parents and other community members into the school with events such as concerts, Books and Bingo, Family Nights, and a Veterans Day program. Enhancing the prekindergarten through sixth grade school’s limited resources are partnerships Kingsland has forged over the years with organizations like the Alaska Sea Life Center, the Seward Arts Association, and the Native Youth Olympics. Kingsland holds an M.A. in Education and a B.A. in Political Science and Education from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
