“Each day, Michelle models professionalism, passion and a desire to serve children,” says Fayetteville superintendent Vicki Thomas of McNair Middle School principal Michelle Owens Hayward.  Recognized for her pioneering use of technology, caring attention to students, and generous participation on local and state education com-mittees, Hayward is also touted by colleagues for the vision and fun she brings to the job.  Under her leadership, McNair was the first campus to embrace a Bring Your Own Device technology policy and has integrated the flipped classroom model, iPads, iTouches, laptops and YouTube videos to facilitate project-based learning and anytime/anywhere professional development.  District leaders say student collaboration and productivity results are “nothing short of amazing,” with students regularly performing above the 90th percentile. McNair’s flexible schedule prioritizes both teacher collaboration and student needs by facilitating daily planning meetings and student small group advisory time.  A range of club options meets individual interests, and McNair’s annual Free Shopping Opportunity ensures that disadvantaged students have access to donated gifts for their families during the Christmas holiday.  Hayward’s service to the community includes participation in committees to help effectively transition district junior high schools to middle schools.  “Hayward is one of those hands-on principals who has a heart for her kids and keeps them number one,” says a colleague.  Hayward holds a B.S.E. in Elementary Education from Arkansas Tech University, an M. S. E. in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Arkansas, and an Ed. S. in Leadership from Arkansas State University.
