“Stony Lane is a shining example of excellence in Rhode Island and the United States,” says North Kingstown School District Superintendent Phil Auger. He credits the leadership of Stony Lane Elementary School principal Edward J. Ferrario for elevating the 405-student, kindergarten through fifth grade school from average to outstanding. Based on student achievement and growth over time, the state DOE gave Stony Lane a Commended status last year. 2013 benchmark test scores, including student proficiency levels at 92 percent in reading, 90 percent in math, and 79 percent in science, also earned Stony Lane a national Blue Ribbon designation. Behind these recognitions are numerous programs and partnerships Ferrario has put into place under the school’s “Do whatever it takes” approach. Through his leadership, the school has embraced Think Social, Open Circle, and Zones of Regulation programs to establish a safe, caring, and supportive environment. Ferrario has also reached out to parents and community members to create partnerships for project-based, interdisciplinary learning. A partnership with the school’s PTO, the University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners, and local farmers resulted in the construction of an outdoor classroom garden to enrich student experiences with hands-on learning. Yearly theme days on topics such as “Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies” involve parents, teachers, and community volunteers who provide mini courses to expand student learning experiences and help them make cross-curricular connections. A colleague lauds Ferrario for creating an atmosphere “where children are educated, nurtured, and loved into becoming successful and happy adults.” Ferrario holds a Business Degree from Rhode Island Community College, a B. A. from Rhode Island College, and an M.A. in Education from Providence College.
