Maine School Administrative District #17
West Paris, Maine

At Agnes Gray Elementary School and Hebron Station School, student achievement and community come together as a recipe for success under the leadership of Principal Melanie S. Ellsworth. With an emphasis on trust and personal relationships, Ellsworth has built partnerships with staff, parents, and the community which have allowed students to enjoy resources and opportunities far beyond what could be offered through limited family and school budgets. Community experts such as business leaders, the fire department, scouts, and sports boosters offer hands-on experiences, site visits, materials, after school tutoring, arts, athletic programs, and more. Real world community service projects, such as crafting a pamphlet of places to visit in the area, provide students with 21st century workplace skills and create confident and capable learners. Ellsworth is also dedicated to growing teacher expertise and has a focus on building professional learning communities that have transformed staff interactions into truly collaborative efforts by empowering teachers to work as a team, analyze data, and set courses for improved practices. Ellsworth shares goals and outcomes with all stakeholders through both technology and face-to-face communication, including regular intervention meetings and parent groups which organize events such as a Family Math and Literacy Night. “She has created an atmosphere where striving to excel is the norm,” says the district superintendent of Ellsworth. Ellsworth’s credentials include a B.S. in Education from the University of Maine, an M.S. in Literacy from the University of Southern Maine, a Reading Recovery Certification from Ohio State University, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education Leadership from the University of Southern Maine.
