Sister Marisa DeRose
St. Anthony Catholic School
Diocese of Paterson
Hawthorne, New Jersey

An innovative, technology-infused curriculum, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the mobilization of parent and parish communities to take on greater responsibility for student performance are among the significant accomplishments of Principal Sister Marisa DeRose of St. Anthony Catholic School. With a strong student-centered approach, St. Anthony has set high expectations for the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of all students under the leadership of DeRose. Noteworthy initiatives include an iPad one-to-one program, the use of eBooks, a STEM focus, authentic assessment, and the integration of a Salesian Pastoral Theme and Catholic school teaching into all areas of the curriculum. Additionally, outreach to parents through a series of Coffee and Conversation events has enabled DeRose to raise $1.5 million and harness parent and community time and talent to provide a range of opportunities. They include curriculum fairs, advanced math classes, a state of the art playground for the Early Childhood program, a media center, expanded drama and music programs, and elective classes for the entire 252-student, prekindergarten through eighth grade population. Growing 34 percent over the past five years, the school has become healthy, sustainable, and affordable. DeRose’s superintendent lauds her as a scholar-practitioner who is dedicated to both education and the mission of Catholic schools, and colleagues say she i. in Education Leaderss a clear leader both academically and spiritually. DeRose holds a B.A. in English from Kean University, a New Jersey Teacher of English certification from William Patterson University, a Religious Sciences post graduate certificate from Pontifical University, an M. Ahip and Supervision, and a New Jersey Principal and Supervision certification from Seton Hall University.
