Nancy A. NettikNancy Nettik has led elementary schools in both Montana and Rhode Island in her career as a principal. In cooperation with local youth associations in both states, Nettik established “wrap-around” programs to extend instructional time and provide child care for kindergarten students. Nettik has served at West Kingston Elementary School in Rhode Island since 1999. The K-5 school of 340 students is situated in a small town. When school leaders reconfigured schools in her district, West Kingston Elementary’s population changed to include significantly more lower-income students. With the help of a Family Engagement Team, Title I Family Outreach Coordinator, and other supports for student achievement, Nettik has surmounted the challenge of ensuring that her formerly high-performing, middle-income school succeeds as a Title I school. “West Kingston School has a diverse population consisting of students from differing socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicity, abilities, and even different countries,” says Nettik. “We work hard to provide the appropriate learning experience for each child.” The positive culture of West Kingston Elementary today is another success of Nettik’s principalship. One way she has cultivated this culture is by establishing a student recognition program that includes monthly schoolwide assemblies. Teachers use this time to focus on the positive student qualities of each child in the school. Nettik earned a B.S. from Western Montana College and an M.S. from Montana State University.
