Montie R. Koehn
Sequoyah Elementary School
Oklahoma City Public School District
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Despite high rates of student mobility and poverty, which have increased during Montie Koehn’s tenure, Sequoyah Elementary has maintained a reputation for outstanding achievement levels. The urban site has earned recognition as an “A+ School” in Oklahoma and in the state superintendent of public instruction’s monthly results presentations. These honors reflect the school’s commitment to daily arts instruction and integration of the arts across the curriculum. The school also has received high ratings for organizational health. Koehn considers the nurturing environment a key factor behind the school’s favorable academic achievement and teacher retention rate. Also, she says, “Our healthy organization has enabled me to build high-functioning teams whose decisions are consistent with our mission and goals, data-based, and anchored in sound theory and practice.” Koehn has led the pre-kindergarten through grade 5 school of 410 students since 2003. With her leadership, Sequoyah Elementary became one of nine schools nationwide to serve as an official Core Knowledge School. As a result, for the past three years in a row her school has piloted the Core Knowledge Reading Program, for which Koehn serves as a national trainer. Koehn credits this program with significantly improving student scores on reading assessments. Her school earned $50,000 worth of materials as a result. She received her B.S. and M.Ed. from the University of Central Oklahoma.
