Marice Highstreet considers her school’s curriculum mapping initiative among her top accomplishments as a principal. The project helped Tri Valley’s staff tighten the focus of instruction based on standards and student learning data. She also credits it with establishing a professional learning community among teachers within her school. “It has provided an exciting time of renewal and growth by allowing the teachers to analyze the content, skills, and assessments of our curriculum; collaborate together in regard to strengths and weaknesses; and then develop long- and short-range plans for improvement,” says Highstreet. She has been principal of Tri-Valley Elementary since 2000. The rural pre-kindergarten through grade 6 school currently counts 453 students. With Highstreet’s leadership, Tri-Valley Elementary has have been outfitted with extensive technology to support student learning. Highstreet strongly supports teachers’ use of high-tech interactive boards and visual presenters, podcasts, and mobile computer labs, and she provides teachers with time to collaborate in using new technologies and ensures that they receive related training. She has also been a strong proponent of cross-curricular projects that allow students to experience learning using many senses, and she has collaborated with teachers and community members to create large-scale educational programs with historical themes such as early American pioneers. She earned a B.A. from Augustana College in South Dakota and an M.A. and an Ed.D. from the University of South Dakota.
